What is Roman Chamomile Essential Oil?

The Roman Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis), also known as English Chamomile, is a perennial herb plant that hails from northwestern Europe & Northern Ireland. It grows close to the ground, with a hairy stem, feathery gray-green leaves, and flowers that appear like miniature daisies, with yellow centers surrounded by white petals. The flowers are steam distilled to create Roman Chamomile essential oil.

What is the difference between Roman Chamomile and German Chamomile? Roman Chamomile and German Chamomile are two varieties of the chamomile plant that differ in appearance, aroma, and concentration of active ingredients. Roman Chamomile has smaller white flowers with yellow centers, a light apple fragrance, and high levels of esters resulting in a clear to pale yellow color. German Chamomile has slightly larger white flowers with blue centers, a sweeter, straw-like scent, and contains chamazulene, which gives it a deep blue color. Both varieties are used for their calming and soothing effects on the skin and digestive system, but German Chamomile is more potent due to its higher concentration of Azulene and is a better anti-inflammatory, while Roman Chamomile is particularly effective as a calming agent.
